Northeast Florida’s Veterans History Project
Congress created the Veterans History Project (VHP), a collection of U.S. veterans’ oral histories, in 2000 as part of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Now the First Coast is launching its collection efforts.
The Mission
VHP seeks to collect and archive the
personal recollections of U.S. veterans (from WWI to the War on Terror) to honor their service and share their stories with current and future generations.
What Items are Included in the VHP Collection?
Donated collections take the form of war veterans’
first-hand oral histories, memoirs, photographs, letters, diaries, and official documents.
What Happens to My Interview and Other Donated Items?
The items you donate to the VHP are housed in the
permanent collections of the Library of Congress. Your stories and collateral material are available to all visiting the Library. In addition, VHP First Coast will host your oral history on its website for researchers, students, friends and family to hear and experience.

Veterans History Project First Coast
VHP First Coast is an initiative of the Community Hospice Veterans Partnership. By taking part,
you’re contributing to the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, one of the world’s most respected research and cultural institutions. VHP has become the largest oral history project in America, so when you participate you’re making history...again.
How Can I Be Part of This Important Project?
If you’re not a veteran, consider becoming a VHP First Coast volunteer. You can conduct interviews, collect historical documents, and also organize interview groups to teach others how to conduct interviews.
Launching Early 2009
If you’re a veteran, register today to be interviewed in 2009. VHP First Coast is in its organizational stages, and will start regularly scheduled interviews in the first quarter of 2009. With more than 250,000 veterans living on the First Coast, this collection will take several years to complete. Once Community Hospice veteran clients’ stories are collected, interviews from area veterans will be conducted on a firstcome, first-served basis.
